Why Are Americans Moving to Greece?

Why Greece Is Becoming a New Home for Americans

For Americans considering a move abroad, Greece offers a combination of Mediterranean living, established international communities, historic cities, coastal destinations, and island life. Some people are looking for a permanent home, while others are relocating for work, family, retirement, business, or a new chapter overseas.

Where you are moving within Greece can also shape your relocation. Moving to Athens is different from settling in Thessaloniki, Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, or one of the smaller Greek islands. Your destination, property type, and access to your new home can all affect how your belongings need to be transported and delivered.

Starting a New Life in Greece

Americans relocating long-term may want to bring furniture, personal belongings, artwork, keepsakes, and other items that help turn a new Greek residence into a home.

Choosing Between Mainland & Island Life

Greece offers very different living environments. A move to Athens or Thessaloniki may look very different from relocating to Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, or another island, particularly when planning the final transportation of your shipment.

Retiring Near the Mediterranean

Some Americans choose Greece for retirement and a slower-paced lifestyle. A long-term retirement move may involve shipping selected household belongings rather than replacing everything after arrival.

Returning to Family or Greek Heritage

For Americans with Greek family connections or heritage, relocating to Greece can mean returning to a place that already has personal meaning. These moves may involve transporting household belongings accumulated over many years.

Moving for Work or Business

Professionals and business owners may relocate to Greece for employment, entrepreneurship, or new business opportunities. These moves can involve both personal belongings and commercial equipment or assets.

Relocating for Military or Government Work

Americans moving to Greece for military or government assignments may have specific timelines and transportation needs for their household belongings.

What Makes Moving From the USA to Greece Different?

Greece Has Its Own Moving Considerations

Moving internationally is not the same in every country. In Greece, your final destination, property type, road access, and whether you are moving to the mainland or an island can all affect how your shipment is planned and delivered. Understanding these details early can help you avoid unnecessary complications later.

SERIOUSLY the NICEST people ever. Between the three ladies that packed the house and the two gentlemen who loaded the truck. Everyone was outstanding, considerate of our items and kind.

We are being moved by the army so we don’t have much say so on who we get but I’m so happy we were placed with this company!

If you want a moving company that keeps you informed, is friendly, and goes above and beyond for all your moving needs, look no further than Nilson Van and Storage, an agent for Mayflower. Jim completed my estimate in my home and he was incredibly kind and easy to work with. Cindy, my moving coordinator, kept me informed every step of the way and was always willing to answer any questions I had. She continues to follow up even after the move was complete! Melvin was the driver and in charge of the days of the move and delivery days. Melvin and his team were careful and considerate of my personal items and ensured the move was smooth and as least stressful it could be. I will be sure to use Nilson Van and Storage for any moving needs and I recommend them to anyone and everyone!

Nilson Van and Storage did a wonderful job helping us move from their customer service to the move itself. Karen did a wonderful job through out the consultation and ensuring all our questions were answered in regards to packing. Theresa made sure to follow up all throughout the process, making sure everything was taken care of prior to the crew arriving to even after, which was very much needed in the chaos of moving! And of course Stanley and his crew were amazing! Even after being stuck in traffic with delays they did not waste a single minute getting all of our items on the truck for transit. All of our items arrived in great shape, and the guys made sure everything was placed exactly where we wanted it! I am so glad we went with their company, it made our move hastle free!

We were assigned Nilson for our military international move a few months ago. They moved our household goods and our unaccompanied baggage and did an amazing job. They were very friendly, packed everything with care, and were very thorough with their labeling of the boxes. Our whole house was packed and ready to go within two days! I want to call out Ty specifically, he made the process so much easier than it could have been and was great about answering all of my questions!

Half our experience was fine but when they packed our kitchen up we told them to not pack two cupboards and they did. One those cupboards had our dog's prescription food so we had to go through boxes to find.

Wow! This was my Wife’s and I first big move using a moving company, and Angie, Ty, and Kayla exceeded every expectation we had. Ty talked me through every part of the move, showed me the truck, and told me exactly how the unpackers should handle our stuff. Kayla took me through all the paperwork and ensured every single item we had was accounted for and tagged with a corresponding number so we can track it all once we get to our unpacking portion. Angie worked incredibly fast and took extra care of every plate and cup in the kitchen to ensure every item was individually wrapped and secured before packing it. All three of these incredible movers never made assumptions about items and asked along the way if we wanted certain things packed… thanks again Ty, Angie, and Kayla- y’all were amazing!
