Three Things to Consider Before Your Next Move

You’ve decided to pull up roots and make a move to a new home. Unless you are fresh out of school, with few possessions, you may have some serious decisions to make. Here are three things to consider before you start packing boxes.

Know Your Expenses

Create a budget for moving and stick to it. Knowing how much you can spend will help you plan and organize what you need to do yourself and what you should hire others to do. Free moving estimates are available from most moving companies.

Don’t forget to include the cost of packing materials, final residential bills, lodging, storage, cleaning, and miscellaneous expenses. Detailed budgeting will prevent you from coming up short at moving time.

Create a Moving Notebook

Keeping all your moving information in one place will keep you organized before, during, and after the move. Use post-it notes or color-coding to divide the notebook or binder into sections. If using a binder, add pocket dividers to hold important papers. Keep everything from important dates and phone numbers to costs and to-do lists in it.

Create a Timeline

It’s helpful to research timelines for different types of moves. It’s easy to find lots of pre-made checklists and timelines online. Know what you need to do and when you need to do it. Some moves take longer to plan than others. Avoid unnecessary stress by having a good timeline in place.
